Fraudulent Hotel Bookings in Canada: Report

The Hotel Association of Canada (HAC) has released a comprehensive report on the rising issue of fraudulent hotel bookings in Canada. This alarming trend is significantly impacting our industry, some key findings from the report include:

  • 84% of HAC members reported being victims of booking fraud in 2024
  • An estimated 3.8 million individual fraudulent bookings have been made so far this year
  • The industry is facing foregone revenue losses of $462 million to $603 million due to these fraudulent bookings

These fraudulent bookings are often linked to visitor visa applications, where applicants or unscrupulous immigration consultants use fake credit cards to make long-term reservations with no intention of staying.

HAC is actively engaging with government officials to implement these recommendations and protect both our industry and the integrity of Canada’s immigration system.
